The Bible contains several accounts of God Himself stepping into the continuum of people’s lives and instituting a name change. In each case it was a destiny changing watershed event. It happened with Abraham, Sarah, Jacob, Peter and others. Names were evidently quite important to God in His dealings with mankind. Zachariah, the father of John the Baptist discovered that aligning himself with God’s instructions on the name of his son brought about a profound miracle, and actually resulted in the restoration of his ability to speak. When he acquiesced to God’s instructions he experienced his deliverance and was once again talking.

Names in the Bible typically revealed something of the nature and character of the individual. I know a few individuals in our contemporary circle of acquaintances who felt their given names did not accurately reflect who God had made them to be, and chose to change their name into something that they felt was more appropriate.

When our church began we were casting about for a name, and wanted something that represented our core values. We settled on the word, and hence name, of Agape. Agape is a Greek word which translates as “God’s love.” Our New Testament was written originally in Greek, and this name has served us well since our founding as we have endeavored to truly represent His love to the world.

We have recently begun undergoing a fundamental change in the nature of our fellowship. We are actively and deliberately embracing the Hebrew roots of our faith. We are seeking to become a congregation that follows the Ephesians 2 mandate of a “One New Man” which will become a home for both Jewish and Gentile followers of Yeshua. In this process we are trying to actually adjust our ways of thinking from the typical Western World style of “Greek thought” to one rooted in “Hebraic thought.”

In striving for continuity in our maturing identity, it was pointed out that Hebrew (in which the Old Testament was written) contains an identical word to Agape. That word is (transliterated) as AHAVA. It also means “God’s love.” We are currently working on logo designs that will accommodate AHAVA while still reflecting the AGAPE by which we have been known for these years.

We sense the leading of Ruach ha Kodesh (Holy Spirit) in making this change. We are trusting Him that it will result also in an adjustment of our mutually shared destiny.

There is the perception of a seismic shaking occurring in the Body of Christ these days. We are living in the days of stunning prophetic fulfillment of Words of the Holy Writ penned thousands of years ago. I am referring to the rebirth and astonishing reestablishment of the nation of Israel, and the massive return of countless descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in our generation to their Promised Land!

A healthy philosophy with which to approach life is to attempt to ascertain what God is doing during your lifetime, and do all in your power to become involved. There is a definite connection between what The Lord (Adonai) is doing in Israel among the Jewish people, and among the predominately Gentile Church. This opens up remarkable opportunities for the perceptive.

The early church of the first century was confronted by the question what to do with two very different cultures and peoples. The earliest church people were exclusively Jewish, steeped in the traditions of their leaders and adherence to the law. They were dominated by Hebraic mindset and thought processes.  The Gentiles were brought up under the influence of Greek thinking. A thorough study of the differences between the two would be a worthwhile endeavour. But suffice it to say for our purposes that some way must be found to unify the two groups if the majestic prayer of Jesus (Yeshua) is to be fulfilled, when He prayed, "that they all may be one, as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be one in us, that the world may believe that you sent me." (John 17:21)

Did you get that?  Yeshua said that the believing of the world depended on the coming together in unity of the various manifestations of His Body?!?  This means that Jew and Gentile must somehow find each other in mutual fellowship and respect, and in some manner become one!

In approaching this oh so sensitive and necessary subject, the Apostle Paul charted a path in his letter to the Ephesians in chapter 2, verses 14 through 16.  "For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, having abolished in his flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity."

God's answer is something called "The One New Man!"  Could something in that mystery possibly be drawing such as we into His eternal purposes?

When, some years ago, we were founding our new church, I was engaged deeply in prayer, seeking Him regarding our destiny. My prayers were focusing on the words of Yeshua in Matthew 16:18 where he said, "...I will build MY church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it."  I realized when He said those words He must have had a mental image of SOMETHING!  I had spent the previous decades of my life attempting to build what I was told was "The Church."  But I don't know I had ever truly seen exactly what it was that He saw, but I knew I didn't want to spend another day of my life building anything else!

Coupled with these thoughts was the fact that some time previously, prophets had spoken into our lives, saying that we would be used to create a "prototype" church. A prototype is a new idea, not following a previous model, but pioneering something very new. What on earth could we possibly come up with that had not been done hundreds of times before?  I was baffled by this until Holy Spirit began drawing me to the "one New Man" concept.

He then did a wonderful thing in that He connected us with a marvellous Messianic Jewish man and his Gentile wife. Marty and Sue Shoub have become very dear friends, and together we have been exploring what such a church might look like.  I come with my principally Gentile theological training, whereas Marty is steeped in the Hebrew language and culture.  Recently we've been "team teaching" where I will often start a message from my perspectives, and then hand off to Marty, who applies the Jewish overlay.  The result is that the congregation receives a much more complete view of the subject at hand than if only one of us had brought a message. The results have been very warmly received.

I truly believe Adonai is actually fulfilling some highly significant prophetic promises. He is doing it in our generation, now, and has provided the amazing opportunity for us to be involved in a cause much larger than ourselves!  With that thought in mind, I invite you to join us as we gather together to offer ourselves in the grand experiment of crafting a "One New Man" church, where Jew and Gentile each maintain their own cultural matrix, while respecting and honouring each other.  Imagine a church that celebrates BOTH Easter and Passover, BOTH Hanukkah and Christmas!

No season of the year brings forth such a flood tide of emotions and nostalgia as Christmas!  The arrival of Jesus the Messiah was not a "stand alone" event.  It was the culmination of centuries of prophetic declarations and Divine Interventions.  One of the most knowledgeable Bible scholars in the universe is satan himself. he knew ALL of the prophecies that foretold the coming of the One who would be his destroyer.  The vast bulk of his efforts through the ages are devoted to knocking God's agenda off the rails. The rise of world empires through history have as a common motivation the defeat of our God's purposes, embodied in the Babe of Bethlehem.

The Pharoah's have come and gone. The Assyrians have fallen. Babylon has collapsed. The Greek empire is in the dustbin of history. Even mighty Rome's empire is nowhere to be found. But Israel and the Messiah are ever present!

One of the serious attempts to destroy God's plan of redemption before it ever got started was when Alexander the Great pretty much took over the world. The empire he established installed one Antiochus IV as ruler over Israel. He had an intense hate for the Jews, and all things Jewish. He halted all worship in the Temple, erected an idol of Zeus in the Holy Place and ordered all to worship it. And worst of all, he defiled the altar by sacrificing a pig on it.

A righteous priestly family arose from among the Jews, and led by one Judah Maccabees (which means 'the hammer'), managed to defeat what was at the time the greatest military power on Earth.  Antiochus and his forces were driven out of the land, and Judah led the task of cleansing the temple of all the filth left by the defeated occupiers. When it was clean it was necessary to rededicate the temple back to Ha Shem.  One of the things being restored was the lighting if the menorah, or candlestick. Olive oil was used as the fuel source to make the light, and there was only sufficient oil for one day's illumination, and eight days were required to produce a new supply of the holy oil. The miracle was that the one day's oil never went out for eight days, until the new oil could be produced!

This miracle is remembered annually in the celebration called Chanukkah, which is Hebrew for "dedication."  Jesus participated in Chanukkah in John 10:22.

Chanukkah is the celebration of the defeat of the devil's plan to stop the coming of Jesus about 150 years before He came. If Antiochus had been successful there would have been no Christmas!  So we see that we owe still more to our Jewish cousins, and can more deeply appreciate the Hebraic roots of our Christian faith!

Light the candles!  Plug in the Christmas lights!  Happy Chanukkah and Merry Christmas!!

Baruk Habab Ha Shem Adonai!!!

No, that's not a misprint. I, and perhaps you, have heard numerous sermons and messages over the years related to, "The Signs of the Times".  I know because I've preached many of them. The main objective of such messages is to impress upon the hearers the lateness of the hour, and the strident need to attend to our spiritual roots diligently.

There was a popular Christian song, sung in many churches several years ago that announced, "These Are The Days Of Elijah," drawing parallels between scriptural prophesies and current events.  But today that song could be justifiably modified to include, "The Days Of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, and others!"  Things of paramount importance are transpiring ON OUR WATCH!!  Scriptures that have lain dormant for millennia are being fulfilled at breakneck speed!  Examples include (but are not limited to) Isaiah 11:11-16, Isaiah 14:1-2, Jeremiah 30:3, and a host of other scriptures. If you have access to a Thompson Chain Reference Bible, check out Chain Reference 1827. There you will find a plethora of Scripture references relating to the return of the Jews to the Land of Israel.  For many years I thought all those references related to the Jews returning from their Babylonian exile, during the reigning of King Cyrus, in the times of Ezra and Nehemiah.  But closer inspection has disabused me from that notion.  Upon closer inspection, I have noted that the aforementioned return from Babylonian captivity involved a return from ONE country by the people of Judah.  That's one people from one place. Careful inspection of the Scripture references cited above will prophesy the return of BOTH Judah AND ISRAEL and from a host of countries, not just one. Therefore, I conclude that the Babylonian return, as wonderful as it was, as fulfilling as it was for many Scriptures, DID NOT FULFILL THEM ALL!  Many have remained unfulfilled until our generation!   Historically Israel and Judah were two separate countries that went into two separate captivities. Judah came home after 70 years, but Israel never did!  That means there are numerous unfulfilled prophetic promises!

The wonderful news is that they seem to be getting fulfilled now!  As I write this (September 2015) there are 10 white trucks driving across Canada raising awareness and collecting donations from Canadians to assist the Jewish people returning to Israel. Anti Semitism is fuelling Jewish people all around the world's desire to return to Israel. Some of the unfulfilled prophesies indicate that they will be assisted in their return by Gentiles!  Rarely in someone's life do they get the opportunity to be a part of actually fulfilling profound prophetic Scriptures, but such a time is NOW!

The "SIGNS" are happening!  It is indeed "THE TIMES OF THE SIGNS!"  Choose to be a part!  If you don't know how to go about it, contact us, and we'll be happy to point you in the right direction!

Dove Saves Soldiers from Death

Ami Maimon (of Bat-Yam) a radio announcer for “Kol Barama” shared an amazing true story that he heard in the synagogue from a soldier. It was during an all-night military operation of an elite unit, the unit was told to take shelter in an abandoned building under commander orders. They approached a certain house before dawn to avoid being discovered. As they watched the house through binoculars before entering they noticed a pigeon standing stationary in mid-air above the door. Thinking this to be a strange sight (how could a white pigeon  stand still in the air without having to flap its wings?), they looked more carefully through their binoculars when they noticed that the pigeon was standing on a thin transparent fishing line. They decided to shoot toward the dove when the fishing wire snapped, the entire house (which was wired) exploded and turned to dust. It turned out that the terrorists hung the transparent wire so that when the soldiers enter the home, loaded with explosives, they would rip the fishing line and blow up.

Another account of the story came from the official Facebook page of Yael Eckstein, the wife of a prominent Israeli rabbi: "At my friend`s synagogue in Israel this week, a soldier that had just returned from Gaza recounted that his army unit identified the home of a Hamas terrorist, and arrived under cover at the the house early in the morning. As they were about to enter the house, they saw a dove hovering overhead and momentarily stopped to watch the dove on a tiny little string. A second later, the entire house blew up. The house was booby-trapped, and the string was connected to the door. If the soldiers had entered the house, they would have all been killed. God sends His messengers in all different shapes and sizes! Praise God for that little dove in Gaza!" (8/14, Israel News Digest, Lonnie Mings).

There are a number of factors that often converge that elevate seemingly obscure individuals to places of prominence. Those factors include such things as the times in which we live. Often the scenarios that lead some to greatness would, in another time, allow perhaps the same person to live out their lives in relative obscurity.

In the 1930’s and 1940’s there was a rather ordinary looking Welshman that emerged. He was a very devout man of intense prayer. We are told that “like attracts like,” and so it was with Rees Howells. Others who had an intense desire to devote themselves to significant times of deep prayer gathered to him. Out of those relationships a Bible School formed, but it was a Bible School with a difference. It was much more devoted to intercessory prayer than to the actual study of the Bible, although a great deal of Bible study was also undertaken.

The historical scene changed, and a petty tyrant in Germany decided to take over the world. Adolph Hitler began to threaten and then attack other countries in Europe, and wholesale war broke out. England stepped forward to try to curtail the evil plans of Hitler, and Germany retaliated. Something called “The Battle of Briton” ensued. This was primarily an air war, fought with airplanes and bombs. London began to be attacked unmercifully. The children of London were evacuated into the countryside to keep them from the risk of falling bombs.

Throughout the building hostilities, Rees Howells faithfully stayed with his agenda, of spending copious times in deep intercessory prayer for God’s protection on his beloved England. Not unaware of the current events being reported in the press, the prayer warriors would focus on the known, immediate needs of the day, and pray diligently.

The remarkable thing is that this small band of Spiritual Soldiers, who advanced in battle on their knees, caught the attention of high up people, including the King! In many historians and historical researchers’ minds, that little prayer meeting is credited with turning the tide of battle from the Germans to the English. There’s an account of a dire moment when England seemed on the verge of collapse, the intensity of the prayer increased, and for reasons no rational person can explain, the Germans simply abandoned their very powerful, strategic assault, and went home! Rees Howells and his band of intercessors have been credited with turning the tide on the Battle of Briton.

Today events overwhelm us. The Middle East is on fire, radical Islamic Jihadists are devastating territory and populations in that troubled area of the world. The reports of horrible atrocities are mounting up at a nauseating rate. People are suffering and dying. Christians are suffering and dying. We see the heart wrenching accounts and long to do something significant to change things. The frustration level grows. Well, we have the same privilege, the same opportunities, and (thankfully) the same God as Rees Howells. May I invite you to focus your passions and frustrations where they can do some real good? Join with millions of Christians around the World who are faithfully interceding for the victims of the ISIS jihad. There IS something we can do!! Remember, “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much!!” James 5:16.
